Annual awards program recognizes the strongest safety programs in the maritime industry

The American Equity Underwriters, Inc. (AEU) presented their 2015 Safety Awards at their annual conference, which took place July 24, 2016 in Lake Oconee, Georgia. 

AEU, the program administrator for American Longshore Mutual Association (ALMA), a group mutual association providing USL&H coverage, presents the awards each year to the best performing ALMA members nationwide. Eligibility for the awards is based on the frequency and severity of workers’ compensation accidents for the prior calendar year. 

“AEU feels strongly about helping our members keep their employees safe, and rewarding and recognizing those that do so,” says Mike Lapeyrouse, president and CEO of AEU. “The Safety Awards are our way of spotlighting those in the maritime industry that are going above and beyond in that effort.” 

“To receive an AEU Safety Award is an acknowledgement that your company is a leader in the most important aspect of business operations - protecting employees from injury or death,” says Jimmy Burgin, senior vice president and director of loss control at AEU. “These companies deserve to be recognized among their peers.”

The 2015 AEU Safety Award Winners are separated into four categories: Marine Cargo Handling, Shipyards, Offshore Industry, and Marine Contracting. To recognize those companies that have made significant strides in improving safety practices and reducing the number of workplace accidents, an award for “Most Improved” was added this year for the Shipyards and Marine Cargo Handling categories.
