AEU was one of the top corporate supporters of The BIG Walk, Big Brothers Big Sisters of South Alabama's major fundraising event. AEU employees raised about 30 percent of the money raised at this year's event.

The American Equity Underwriters, Inc., a Mobile, Alabama-based, nationwide leader in workers’ compensation insurance for maritime employers, was one of the top corporate supporters of The BIG Walk, Big Brothers Big Sisters of South Alabama’s major fundraising event held earlier this month.

The BIG Walk took place May 13 on the Causeway in Spanish Fort. AEU employees raised a combined $29,285, or about 30 percent of the money raised at this year’s event. AEU has been the top fundraising company each year since The BIG Walk began three years ago.

“Our employees truly share the belief that mentoring matters, and you see it in their support of The BIG Walk,” says Michael Lapeyrouse, AEU president and CEO, who was recently appointed BBBSA board chairman. “The event is a fun way to take part in friendly competition, and we’re thrilled to be part of an initiative that directly benefits the south Alabama community.”

Since it began, The BIG Walk has raised more than $200,000, which has contributed to the formation of hundreds of match relationships across south Alabama.

“This is our 10th year in partnership with AEU, which is responsible for changing thousands of lives for the better, forever. Their fundraising efforts are so critical to our entirely donor-supported mentoring mission,” says Aimee Risser, president and CEO of BBBSA. “We're proud to partner with AEU because they fully embrace our innovative approach to solving social issues in our community, and as a result, everyone wins.”
